Pregnancy is perhaps one of the most fascinating events in life a woman would encounter in her lifetime. While it embarks another milestone in a woman’s life, it is undeniably without a doubt that motherhood is one of the most stressful periods in a woman’s life – both physically and mentally.

Pregnant women tend to be sensitive to certain smells. As such, is it a best practice to avoid candles during pregnancy?

First, one of the most dangerous things in a candle that you must avoid during your pregnancy is paraffin wax. Ample evidence supports the dangers of paraffin wax candles for users – not just for a pregnant woman alone. This study suggests that some candles release organic compounds and particular matter into the air, which can enter the lungs.

Indeed, aromatherapy, or burning scented candles, is something that most of us enjoyed doing. Having said all this, if you are a pregnant woman who seems to love doing it so, we’ve got you all pretty much covered up. Burning candles while pregnant is perfectly fine so long as you’re burning the right kind of candles – paraffin and lead-free candles made with natural wax, cotton, or wood wicks are something that you should keep an eye on.

If your pregnancy is quite sensitive, you may experience headaches, nausea, sneezing, and fatigue when exposed to a candle. These symptoms may subside the moment the candle is blown out, but still, we highly suggest that you step out for a bit to get a breath of fresh air.
