Aging skin tends to lose elasticity and look saggy, and wrinkles develop as skin tone decreases and dryness sets in. Giving your skin a youthful look may seem impossible, but there are some things you can do to give a younger look to your skin. Here are some tips.
1. Make-up
When you apply make-up to aging skin, it helps to use different techniques than you used to when your skin was younger. Your skin has changed, so it makes sense to change the way you apply make-up. Professionals recommend the following make-up tips to help your skin look younger:
-
- Use creams instead of powders, as creams tend not to accentuate fine lines like powders
-
- Think warm, light colors for blush and bronzers
-
- Choose a lighter color base than you think you need; add depth with bronzers instead of using a darker shade of base
-
- Lip liner should not be any darker than the lipstick color
-
- Use frosted, light colors above the eyes
-
- Be gentle when you apply make-up and take care not to pull, snag, or harshly rub your skin
-
- Look for make-up with a shimmer effect to add glow
2. Moisturize Daily
Even if your skin does not feel dry, aging skin needs daily moisture. It is drier than young skin, even if it does not feel like it, because the oil glands do not produce the same amount of oil as they used to. Look for moisturizers with vitamin E and natural oils. Moisturizers that contain sweet almond oil are said to be very effective, and in fact, using sweet almond oil directly on older skin can help it look younger.
Use a moisturizer under your make-up, and apply a night cream at night before bed.
3. Cleansing
For older skin, you need a moisture-rich cleanser. Skin care experts advise patting skin dry carefully rather than rubbing hard with a towel.
4. Drink Water
Aging skin needs hydration from the inside more than ever. Drinking plenty of water is considered one of the most important things you can do to make skin look younger. Adding a squeeze of lemon or even some fresh fruit or vegetable juice to your water is fine, but make sure what you drink the most of is water – sodas, tea, coffee, and so forth are not considered as beneficial as plain old water.
5. Massage
Each morning, giving your face a gentle massage can help give a smoother, more relaxed look to your skin. Massaging increases circulation and perks up older skin. Look for tutorials online or consult a dermatologist for specific massage techniques.
6. If you smoke
QUIT. Experts warn of the harmful effects of smoking, both inside and out. Smokers face is becoming a well-known look. Smoking not only produces harmful free radicals in your body (which compromise your skins tone and health), but health professionals warn that smoking also decreases circulation throughout the body by causing blood vessel constriction. This starves your skin of much-needed blood, which may result in sagging, wrinkling, and an aged look, even in younger people.
